Its original was brought to life between 1903 and 1907 and was a portrait commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer of his wife, Adele. Klimt used a variety of paints and other materials—including oils, gouache, silver and gold—to bring a true opulence to the piece. In 2015 a film—also titled ‘Woman In Gold’—was released, detailing the story of how the painting was returned to the original family’s possession, after being stolen by the Nazis in 1938.
